WORK
Cone & Graham, Inc. served as a key participant in the reconstruction of Taxiway J over George Bean Parkway at Tampa International Airport. This project was part of a critical infrastructure upgrade aligned with the airport’s master plan, aimed at enhancing airfield operations, accommodating future traffic growth, and preparing for the construction of an automatic people mover (APM) system.
The scope of work included the complete reconstruction of Taxiway J while maintaining the existing vertical and horizontal geometry. Cone & Graham, Inc. replaced the aging taxiway bridge, originally built in 1969, to support future widening of George Bean Parkway and to create space for a future APM connection to the new consolidated rent-a-car (CONRAC) facility.
Extensive phasing was required to minimize disruptions to both vehicle traffic and aircraft operations. The project included detailed maintenance of traffic plans and a construction safety and phasing plan (CSPP) to ensure safe navigation within the air operations area (AOA). Coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was essential throughout the project.
As part of the project, the Runway 10 threshold was displaced by 498 feet to meet clearance requirements for the APM system. New airfield lighting and in-pavement runway guard lights (RGL) were installed on Taxiway J to enhance safety and reduce the risk of runway incursions. Additionally, utility relocations and drainage improvements were completed to support long-term operational efficiency.
The successful completion of the Taxiway J reconstruction enhances connectivity at Tampa International Airport, ensuring the infrastructure can accommodate future growth and development as outlined in the airport’s master plan.
