WORK
Cone & Graham, Inc. is delivering essential infrastructure improvements as part of the I-4/SR 559 interchange upgrade, a project designed to accommodate future growth and expansion in Polk County. This $21.37 million project, which began in August 2014, is part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s long-term plan to improve traffic flow and safety in the area while preparing for the eventual widening of I-4.
The project includes the construction of a new bridge on State Road 559 over I-4 and the expansion of SR 559 from two to four lanes north of the newly realigned County Road 559A. This expansion will improve access to the westbound I-4 entrance ramp and enhance traffic capacity along this critical corridor. Additionally, the project involves shifting the eastbound lanes of I-4 to the south to make room for future median expansions, as well as installing highway lighting, resurfacing roadways, and improving drainage systems.
A key feature of the project is the widening of the SR 559 bridge to allow for future expansion, ensuring that the interchange can accommodate increased traffic in the years to come. This forward-thinking approach minimizes the need for acquiring additional right-of-way and simplifies future widening projects on I-4.
The relocation of CR 559A has also addressed a long-standing issue with truck traffic through downtown Auburndale. By straightening CR 559A, the project has improved the flow of semi-truck traffic and reduced congestion in the downtown area, making it safer for pedestrians and easing truck access to U.S. 92.
The I-4/SR 559 interchange improvements are a vital part of the region’s long-range transportation plan, supporting continued growth in the area surrounding Florida Polytechnic, Lake Myrtle Sports Park, and Saddle Creek Corporation’s distribution center. By improving traffic flow and preparing for future expansion, this project will have a lasting impact on both residential and commercial development along this important transportation corridor.
